Backup/Restore your PC
I’ve been fighting a computer that got damaged after a power blackout. The first thing that I noticed was that the hard drive was corrupted and unusable, so after getting over my anger, I got a new one, connected it and installed Windows XP on it. I then proceeded to install all the software that I use on the computer and I was all set. Went to sleep and the next morning the computer was restarting over and over and over without being able to start Windows. I was puzzled. I thought maybe there was a problem with the Windows installation, so I decided to reformat the drive and reinstall… again.

The Windows installation kept stopping in the middle saying that “it couldn’t find a whatever.xxx file”, the options given were “retry” or “ignore”, but if I clicked on “retry” it wouldn’t find the file again, and if I clicked on “ignore” it wouldn’t install Windows >:(

HD detection problems
So I got a new Hard Drive (Western Digital 160Gb Caviar Blue SATA), connected it to my Motherboard, checked that it was recognized in the BIOS (it was), started windows XP and oh $#@%, Windows wouldn’t detect it.

After reading about a thousand posts in many different forums, that suggested a wide range of solutions, from updating my Motherboard’s BIOS firmware, to editing the Windows registry; and trying all of them, it turns out that the solution was simpler than I could have ever thought.

This problem was due to the order the hard drives were connected to the motherboard and some jumpers in other hard drives and cd/dvd drives.

Fring
I recently bumped into this application for smart (and not so smart) phones, and I think it's worth sharing with the world and my website followers. It's called "Fring" and it's a small program that integrates (almost) all the communicators that are out there in your cellphone.

You can chat in MSN, AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, Facebook and more.

You can also use many "Voice Over IP" programs like Skype and Google Talk, as well as update your Twitter status and many more.

If your phone has WiFi capabilities, you can use this service completely free anywhere you have a WiFi connection. If you have a working GPRS or any other type of cellular connection to the internet on your phone, you can also use this service, although, depending on your cellular carrier, different costs may apply. Although it is important to say that chatting uses so little bandwith that it is basically free, even if you pay per downloaded Megabyte.

ColorPicker

Every time I make a webpage, I need to use different colors. In the past, that meant opening Adobe Photoshop and picking colors in the "color palette" so I could find out their HTML code. Now, I have a fast computer, but when I have a bunch of browser windows open, itunes playing music in the back, Filezilla uploading files to my server, and many other programs doing all kinds of tasks, opening an Adobe CS4 program can take a while and important CPU resources.

But that's all in the past, now I use ColorPicker.com, the same I was doing with Photoshop but in a browser tab ;)
What you see down here is not an image! It's the actual ColorPicker.com site displayed in an iframe... that means you can use it here!

Must have software

So I'm responsible for the computers and network in my house (4 wired desktop pcs, 1 wireless desktop pc, 3 wireless laptops, 2 wireless mac laptops), and one of the most common tasks I do is re-formatting of all the different computers. I have learned that no matter what you do, what programs you install or don't install, Windows XP has a finite life-span that averages something between 6 to 18 months, after which there is nothing you can do to speed up the computers except for a fresh installation of Windows XP.

Having done this task hundreds of times, I have come up with a pretty good system on how to do it, and there is always a set of programs that I install. I will share here with you the list of software and the order you should install these programs in the following order*:

  1. Windows XP - Pro is always better than Home, and at the end of the installation process, when Windows asks you if you want to be protected by "windows Security Center" and download all kinds of crap, you should choose the "NO / later" option. I don't recommend Windows Vista because it still has many bugs and hardware compatibility issues.
